The voices of women with disabilities must be heard even in the darkest times.
The Society of Women Graduates organized a dialogue session entitled:
“Women and Girls with Disabilities in Times of Wars and Disasters – Reality, Challenges, and Future Opportunities.”
This session was held within the framework of the project “Enhancing the Meaningful Participation of Women’s Civil Society Organizations in Social Cohesion, Crisis Response, and Early Recovery,” in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People, and funded by France through the UNDP Financing Window.
The session opened a space for discussion about the severe challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities during crises in Gaza. Participants agreed that the absence of an enabling environment and the difficulty of accessing essential services increase their isolation and suffering.
Key recommendations from the session included:
1. Collecting accurate and disaggregated data on women with disabilities to facilitate intervention and planning.
2. Developing emergency plans that take into account their specific needs during displacement and crises.
3. Promoting their inclusion in programs and services and ensuring they are not excluded.
4. Building the capacities of humanitarian staff in addressing disability issues and sign language.
5. Providing special protection for children with disabilities during conflicts.
This session affirmed that empowering women and girls with disabilities is a fundamental right and a prerequisite for achieving a more just and equitable society.
